What is swfchan

If you would like to categorize the flashes that you watch that is enough help. Or maybe even look through the categories and fix those that aren't correct. I realize that's a lot of tedius work though so I understand if nobody feels like doing that. Making or finding new flashes and uploading them to swfchan. I've noticed that too, but sometimes it's a lot longer delay than other times. Unfortunately there's a chance that swfchan will miss the last reply if the thread deletes too fast.

I wonder what kind of proning system he has for old threads. Maybe it depends on how many flashes that are uploaded after the thread goes off the list?

I just finished version 1. It will provide alternative download locations for users of the site. They can grab the flash files from either a mirror or the swfchan server.

The more that would put up mirrors the less stress the server receives and the faster the site gets for everybody. The server distributes flash files to your mirror automatically so you'd always have the latest flashes on your disk. I still consider this an experiment, it all depends on if some good people are willing to put up mirrors.

Mackan, glad you added the automatic DLing feature! I'm noticing your mirror is not online right now though, take a moment and upgrade to the latest version when you have the time. Just thought I'd mention that there's no auto-update in the client so it must be done manually just replace the jar file with the new one.

Thought about adding auto-update before but came to the conclusion that it's not worth the trouble since I eventually probably soon will reach a stable final version and then no further updates will be needed. Other than maybe once a year. It would be good to have it but it always depends on if its worth the time it takes to implement. Think the thread's about to anyway. In order for it to work it depends on regular site visitors being willing to contribute. Instead of all files being downloaded directly from swfchan a list of mirror locations will be presented to the one trying to download the file. This will reduce the stress of the main server and also make files download much faster for everybody.

If you are in the US you can get the swf from a US location instead of pulling it from the overloaded swfchan server in Sweden, and if you are in Japan you can get the swf from a Japanese location. If such locations exist, that is. To be honset I don't really expect this to succeed since I'd have to find a few motivated people that actually are willing to sacrifice a little of their own bandwidth just for the good of the community.

And if it doesn't at least I tried. I'd be pretty happy if I can get just one lasting mirror with a couple of files. So even if you don't plan to host a permanent mirror I'd appreciate it if you could test the thing out for a moment, even if you just share a couple of flash files.

Put some swf files in there and restart the client. If I've done the code correctly, and you have ports UDP and TCP open, your computer should now be working as a fully automated mirror. Looking at the flash version is a somewhat good way of telling how old a flash file is, but also not reliable since you can export flash files to any previous version.

Time passed and a few months later when I felt up for the task again I discovered how poorly I had written my source, it felt impossible to pick up where I left. So I remade swfchan from scratch starting 6:th of March with a simple goal of just putting my own vast and not hand-picked flash collection online.

Some ideas were tossed, others improved, but finally only two months later the site was online, with a lot better core system than my original version.
